There are numerous simple experiments which children remember their entire lives. Although they do not entirely understand what is actually happening, when the time comes, they might be at physics or chemistry class, and an obvious example will pop up from their memory!

These 3 experiments are frequently remembered by children:

  1. Needed: 2 balloons, 1 candle, a safety match and water.

Experiment: Inflate the balloon and keep it above a lighted candle in order to demonstrate the children how the balloon pops. Then, fill another balloon with water, tie it and put it above the candle. The balloon will not pop.

Explanation: The water in the balloon absorbs the heat emitted by the candle and therefore the balloon will not get heated and pop.

  1. Needed: nylon bag, several pens, water.

Experiment: Fill a half of a nylon bag with water and use the pens to penetrate the nylon bag in the areas where the water is.

Explanation: If you penetrate the nylon bag, and afterwards fill it with water, the water will drain out of the holes. However, if you previously fill the bag with water and then penetrate it with a sharp object so that the object remains inside the bag, there will be no flow of water. The explanation is that in the process of popping, the molecules of polyethylene attract even more closely. In the case of the experiment, this occurs in the area around the pens.

  1. Needed: 4 glasses with water, color additives, cabbage leaves ( or white flower leaves)

Experiment: Add any type of color in every glass and put one leaf in every glass. Leave it like this overnight and in the morning you will notice how the leaves are colored in different colors.

Explanation: The plants absorb the water and feed their leaves and flowers with it. Thanks to the capillary structure, the water fills the tiny straws inside the plant on its own. This is the way in which flowers, weeds and trees feed themselves. Therefore, by absorbing the colored water, the plants change their color.
